About

We are building a supportive community to strengthen engaged art history.

We believe:

An engaged art history works toward transformational change in our discipline, our institutions, and our broader communities.

Art history as a field has social value and impact. It deserves continued support.

An engaged practice uses the power of art history ethically.

Engaged art history takes many different forms, reflecting the variety of its practitioners, methods, products, subjects, and contexts.

Knowledge relevant to art history can come from academic study, professional practice, or lived experience.

Working collaboratively and co-creating knowledge are important practices. They require an ongoing commitment to building, nurturing, and maintaining relationships.

Grappling with art history’s past and its legacies of elitism and oppression in the present – including colonialism, racism, and sexism – is a critical foundation for an engaged practice.
