Our Story

Engaged Art History grew out of a virtual symposium that convened in spring 2021. Eager to foster conversation, create connections among colleagues, and expand engaged art historical practices, Erin Benay and Laura Holzman organized two days of facilitator-led discussions dedicated to “Building an Engaged Art History.” Amazingly, nearly 200 people based in at least 16 different countries asked to participate. From that initial pool, around 40 curators, academics, non-profit staff members, independent scholars, and graduate students joined together to think about how practices of public scholarship, co-creation, public address, and community engagement take shape in and around our discipline.

From the rich conversations that began during that brief event, members of the symposium community are now working together to create a lasting community of practice. To support that endeavor, this site is a place to continue conversations among engaged practitioners, to collate resources, and, ultimately, to build a more just, equitable, and inclusive art history.
